Writers of the Future

I’ve recently been informed that I’ve won a 1st Place Prize in the Writers of the Future contest.  When I learned I was a finalist I was overjoyed. This outcome far exceeds anything I imagined.

Here is the press release for the announcement if you’d like to know more about the other winners.

And here is a link if you want to know more about the contest.

Over the years I’ve written a tremendous amount of nonfiction for technology companies large and small.  Business plans, technical manuals, white papers, patent applications, sales and marketing literature, even scripts for audio and video.  Writing fiction leverages this experience but it really does require a supplemental skill set.

Orson Scott Card’s Literary Boot Camp helped me make the transition from nonfiction to fiction.  Here is a link to information about this excellent writing seminar and the online community for writers and aspiring writers.

Dean Wesley Smith and Kristine Kathryn Rusch’s Marketing Class really helped me understand the business side of writing and selling fiction.  Here is a link to information about the seminars Dean runs.

I’m sold on continuing education for writers.  Without these classes I’d still be making the same mistakes over and over again.  I met a lot of great people in these classes as well; other writers that I’m proud to call my friends.

Thanks to all my friends who keep me honest and motivated. You know who you are.
